Health concerns are very personal. No one can tell you how to react to getting news that you’ve been diagnosed with a medical condition.
For Gabourey Sidibe, that was Type 2 diabetes.
The 33-year-old is known for her over the top personality and her breakout roles in film and on television, but after being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes she had to make a decision. And that decision was weight loss surgery.
When discussing her upcoming memoir, Sidibe recently opened up to People magazine about her decision to get laparoscopic bariatric surgery. I’m sure making the decision wasn’t easy, but she felt that was her best option.
“I truly didn’t want to worry about all the effects that go along with diabetes. I genuinely [would] worry all the time about losing my toes,” shared Sidibe. Later in the article she shared, “The surgery wasn’t the easy way out,” she says. “I wasn’t cheating by getting it done. I wouldn’t have been able to lose as much as I’ve lost without it.”
Gabourey went on to share her weight loss goals and why she’s trying to keep some things about her journey private:
“I have a goal right now, and I’m almost there,” she says. “And then once I’ve got it, I’ll set another. But my starting weight and my goal weight, they’re personal. If too many people are involved, I’ll shut down.”
Keep pushing towards those goals and do whatever makes you happy.
