2013 February Plus Size Cover Model: Samantha Lebbie

Samantha Lebbie is a woman on a mission. The Washington, DC native has turned her love for expressing herself in areas such as singing, dancing and acting into a very promising career as a plus size model. The 5’9 beauty is a self professed lover of all things fashion!

She has successfully found a way to merge all of her interests into something pretty amazing! This month Samantha shared her story with Read about her journey and the amazing places it’s taken her so far.

What song makes you want to dance?

I love Rihanna her new song “Pour it Up”

What’s in your makeup bag?

MAC Concealer and Foundation and a lot of other stuff!

What’s your go-to outfit for a laid back day?

I’m not a sneaker kind of girl so I just purchased some Sneaker Wedges from Steve Madden I wear them with some Leggings or Jeans with a V Neck T-shirt and a Blazer.

You’re known as a plus size model but many people don’t know that you wear multiple hats.  Tell us about your work as a stylist and entrepreneur.

I own a Boutique called Violet Bloom Unique Accessories founded in 2008. We sell everything that makes an outfit with flair.  I design custom pieces for my Clients and I also sell wholesale clothing; that’s where the Styling portion comes in. I started off being an accessory stylist for fashion shows and photo shoots. Since Modeling I’ve just ventured into clothing but fashion is my passion.

Did having your boutique and designing jewelry make it easier for you to get into modeling?

Not really, I’ve always wanted to get into Modeling since I was a teenager but I didn’t know where to start.

When and how did you start modeling.  Tell us about your journey.

I started modeling professionally a little over a year ago. I did my RESEARCH! I literally read everything there was to know about modeling not just plus modeling but modeling as a whole to find out if this in fact was something for me.

You mentioned research.  How important was that in your journey towards becoming a model?

I looked into the requirements of a plus model through Plus Model Magazine. It was very important I didn’t want to rely on asking someone when I could go right to the source. I’m so happy I did because in the end it turned out to be in my best interest.

You’ve done runway and print modeling.  How did you get your start?

I signed up on model mayhem and from there I met a designer who was just launching his first Plus Line (TimBro Collection) and wanted to use me! I was so excited from there I did my first casting call with Curves Rock Fashion Weekend in Baltimore. They used me for their promotional material and I’m so elated because I am doing their promotional ads again this year. From there I did Full Figure Fashion Week and it seems like my modeling career took off.  I’ve had the pleasure of working with top designers and I landed my first campaign with Ashley Stewart for their pre-fall collection. Amazing right!? I’m still in shock.

How was it working with Ashley Stewart’s jean campaign?  Was it everything you imagined it would be?

It was more than I imagined! I really felt like I made it to the Big Leagues! It was my first time doing a 10 hour shoot and I loved every bit of it. I had the pleasure of working with my idol, plus model Allison McGevna. The surreal moment was seeing my photos in stores. From LA to Atlanta to Florida to Michigan …… no words can describe the feeling. I was truly humble and very thankful for the opportunity.

When you’re not modeling what hobbies do you have?

I enjoy hanging with friends, going to the movies, reading and shopping.

What was the last movie you saw, book you read and item you purchased shopping?

I can’t think of the last movie I saw, I’ve been so busy I haven’t been to the movies in a while. The book that I’m reading now is 50 Shades of Gray. The last thing I purchased was a dress by Miss Tina.

Speaking of designers.  With the exception of Ashley Stewart, is there a designer that you would like to work with?

I would love to work with Monif C. I’ve admired her clothing line since before I began modeling.

What does modeling do for you?

I model for others not for me. I love the fact that the consumer can Identify with me when they see me wearing the clothes. I enjoy empowering others and Inspiring them to want to do more, be more and become more out of life. So If I can do that through modeling I never plan to stop.

What has modeling taught you about yourself?

That I am humble, patient and diligent! I’ve always been a positive person but since modeling its become apart of my life to spread positivity throughout the plus community.

What advice can you give to other aspiring models?

Go for your dreams and don’t let anyone stop you! Not even YOU!!! Modeling is a business and you must treat it as such never take anything personal and always be professional because you are a BRAND.

What would your 14 yr. old self feel about you modeling?

At 14 I would probably be AMAZED!!! I was far from Glamorous at 14. She would say, I wanna be just like you when I grow up!

Keep Up With Plus Model Samantha Lebbie
