The conversation…..Body Shaming.
The October ‘Love Your Body’ issue of PLUS Model Magazine features Kalber on the cover and inside the magazine plus size models bare their curves in an effort to take a stance.
The plus size models in the fashion spread include Liris Crosse, Wyinnetka, Laura Johnson, Emma Meyer and Ivory. The editorial included quotes like:
- “No one is safe from body shaming.”
- “Freedom of speech does not give way to hurtful words.”
- “Body shaming is on the rise in the plus size industry. Smaller models are verbally based for not being “plus” enough. Larger models are scolded for being too big.”
This isn’t the first time that PLUS Model Magazine has made headlines. In January they received national attention for the article Plus Size Bodies, What is wrong with them anyway?
Like the previous feature, PMM’s recent article on Body Shaming forces us to do a self examination and to be more aware of the words that we say as they could be viewed as offensive.
A few months ago our readers weighed on the article, Fat on Fat Crime and many of them admitted to using the phrases that we mentioned in the article against their peers. Although they didn’t mean any harm, our conversation revealed that it is possible to body shame without realizing that you’re doing it. As a rule of thumb it’s best to keep the golden rule in mind, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”
