OWN (Oprah Winfrey) Signs Exclusive Programming Deal With Tyler Perry

Oprah Winfrey is partnering with Tyler Perry to produce scripted programming scheduled to debut on OWN in 2013. Tyler Perry is known for directing and producing movies like Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Madea’s Family Reunion and television shows, Meet The Browns and For Better or Worse both currently airing on TBS.

Current Tyler Perry shows will continue to air on TBS with Perry producing original programming for OWN. “I have been looking forward to the day when we would be in the position to enter the world of scripted television. That day has come. We are all energized by the opportunity to collaborate with Tyler who has a proven track record for producing highly successful cable series. He has an incredible ability to illuminate life stories and characters in his unique voice and inspires and encourages people all over the world,” said Oprah Winfrey.

OWN has struggled with ratings since debuting in 2011. This isn’t Winfrey’s first attempt at bringing star power to the network. In 2011 The Rosie O’Donnell show was revived on OWN in an effort to trademark her network; that didn’t last long.

The amount paid to Mr. Perry isn’t known but he’s excited about the partnership as well. “It’s a dream realized to partner with Oprah and bring scripted programming to OWN,” Mr. Perry said in a statement. “She has accomplished so much with the network and I’m excited to work with her to be a part of its continued growth.”

Are you excited about this news? Do you think original programming from Tyler Perry will help OWN?
