How Does Obamacare Affect Me?

How Does Obamacare Affect Me?

Yesterday The U.S. Supreme Court voted to uphold the constitutionality of the health care law that was originally proposed by President Barack Obama and passed in 2010. Although there are some restrictions, it’s pretty much in tact unless it’s changed by Congress.

Now that Obamacare has been upheld by the Supreme Court, how does it affect the majority of us?

  • Insurance companies cannot deny coverage for individuals with pre-existing conditions.
  • Canceling coverage for ill people or charging them higher premiums based on gender or medical history would be barred.
  • The HCR Bill includes a hardship exemption for low income families.
  • Small businesses with fewer than 25 employees and average annual wages of less than $50,000 will be eligible for tax credits to cover up to 50% of their insurance premiums.
  • Women would receive free birth control and other preventative services, unless you work for a faith-based organization that is against birth control.
  • Lower seniors’ prescription drug prices by beginning to close the donut hole.
  • Young adults can stay on their parent’s health care plans up to 26 years old.
  • Starting in 2014, almost everyone will be required to be insured or pay a fine; there are subsidies to help people who can’t afford coverage.
