The news that Susan G. Koman For The Cure will no longer give money to Planned Parenthood left many women upset, confused and outraged over their decision. Women frowning upon their decision have commented on Facebook and blog posts since the news was announced. For years Planned Parenthood has been considered the nation’s leading sexual and reproductive health care provider and advocate.
Susan G. Koman’s disassociation is viewed as a political move to some especially abortion rights advocates who site “political pressure” as the reason for their drastic decision.
When questioned, Susan G. Komen representatives stated, “It is critical to underscore that the women we serve in communities remain our priority. We are working directly with Komen Affiliates to ensure there is no interruption or gaps in services for women who need breast health screening and services.”
Planned Parenthood expressed their thoughts and disappointment in the decision.
“We are alarmed and saddened that the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation appears to have succumbed to political pressure,” says Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood.
While Richards hope they reconsider their decision, Planned Parenthood recently announced an “emergency fund” received from a different group that totals $250,000. This fund will cover some of the money they lost from the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
It’s very difficult to decipher the real reason behind this decision. I’ve never personally used the services of Planned Parenthood but I recall them speaking at my school during my teen years. Although abortion advocates are the more vocal ones speaking out, we must remember that the information provided by this organization have saved many lives.
I’ve had friends who would visit Planned Parenthood to get various forms of contraception and to inquire about subjects pertaining to sex and STD’s that they did not feel comfortable discussing with others.
I understand the need to be on the right side of the fence when it comes to politics but being on the right side should never affect people negatively.

Planned parenthood provides birth control for woman, especially low income woman. I think abortions are wrong in most cases, however, woman DO NOT need the GOP and zealous Senators policing woman’s health care! No woman should stand for this type of interference by men. The investigation into Planned Parenthood was trumped up and continued even after they complied with the requirements to provide documentation for all their services, showing NO FEDERAL MONEY spent on abortions. The “investigation” is being used to further try to eliminate PP altogether! SINK THE PINK! I won’t purchase another product with the pink ribbon or any association with KOMAN. I won’t help organize or participate in any further events! 60 plus years of research into breast cancer and what do we have to show for it; Politicians (GOP, Conservative) who think that government should stay out of every aspect of our lives, EXCEPT where woman are concerned!
