Nicknamed “The Granddaddy of Them All”, The Rose Bowl will take place on January 2, 2012 in sunny Pasadena, California. Presented by Vizio, the Rose Bowl is one of the most anticipated collegiate games of the year, but why?
After speaking to my older brother who I might add is a High School football head coach, I gained a better understanding of the history of the Rose Bowl.
Here are 6 things you should know about the Rose Bowl Game.
1) It’s rich history dates back to over 100 years ago, in fact the first game was played in 1902 and has been continuous since 1916.
2) The Tournament of Roses Parade became affiliated with The Rose Bowl in 1902 in an effort to help fund the cost of staging the parade. It is regarded as one of the most viewed parades in the world because it is seen by millions of viewers on television worldwide and in more than 200 countries internationally.
3) The teams competing in the Rose Bowl are determined by the winners of the Big Ten and Pacific-12 conferences. These teams secure their spots by winning the Big Ten Football Championship game and Pac-12 Championship game, respectively.
4) Originally titled the “Tournament East-West football game”, the 1st game featured the 1901 Michigan Wolverines football team, representing the East, which beat the team from Stanford University, representing the West.
5) Before the Rose Bowl stadium was built in preparation for the 1923 match, games were played in Pasadena’s Tournament Park, about three miles southeast of the current Rose Bowl stadium.
6) This year the Oregon Ducks, winners of the Pac-12 Championship game, will represent the Pac-12 Conference, and the Wisconsin Badgers will represent the Big Ten after winning the Big Ten Championship Game.
