During the holidays, we take time to visit with families and loved ones and cherish the time spent with one another. It is when I’m with my family, that I can just be me and not fret about impressing others. It is a time when I am totally and completely myself. I have come to the realization that my style has a lot to do with my family and how I was raised. My mother raised me to be unconventional and not fall into stereotypes. From types of school to crazy clothing, she allowed me to go through the changes until I found my niche. In terms of style, I like to define myself as a preppy/chic/urban kind of style. I couldn’t define it in one because I dabble into so many styles! So, I thought to myself: “What other type of styles are there that I see on a daily basis?”. Let’s explore:
Bohemian
Available At Swak Designs Plus Sizes
This is the easy, breezy clothing that is comfortable and seems effortless but looks amazing with the right styling. Maxi dresses/skirts, scarves, billowing blouses painted with flowers and other whimsical designs, a pair of cool shades, cute sandals and several other accessories build this style that women have come to love.
Classic
This style is basic and chic. Staples include crisp white button down tops, pencil skirts and well-tailored slacks and blazers, classic cut denim and neutral colored shoes. The most influential woman in fashion owned this style: Jackie O – with her tailored suits, ankle cropped pants and sensible heels. Classic styles usually have minimalistic pieces and very little design. All cuts are clean and all pieces are well tailored and crisp.
Rock and Roll
Available At Fashion To Figure
Leather, leather and more leather! Rock and roll peeps love to “rock” leather fabric clothing weather it be a mini skirt, motorcycle jackets, or a simple blazer. The look is nice as long as the leather is kept to only ONE piece of clothing. Other ensemble pieces include: animal print tops (leopard, tiger, zebra) usually in a spaghetti strap cut; metallic tanks that are loose fitting; skinny or dandy vests; and dresses with studded metal embellishments. All of these pieces will remind you of an era that was sexy, frisky, and definitely eye-catching.
Mod

Ah, the “Twiggy Era”. This look originated in London in the 1960s. Streets were flooded with women in mini skirts and thigh high boots, A-line mini dresses that did not have a lot of shape to them but women would take full advantage of showing their long stems. Looks also included: cropped blazers with over-sized, round buttons; trench coats with bold white stitching; and trapeze dresses. These looks were able to be used in the work place or in a more casual setting. Bold colors as well as black and white designs are equally used in mod clothing pieces.
Preppy
Available At OneStopPlus.com
Oh the “Prepsters”! Whenever I think of preppy, I think of country clubs, glee clubs, private schools, and for some reason Connecticut. For preppy looks the essentials include: cardigans, polos, khakis, pleated skirts, oxford shoes, and pearls. I love taking advantage of how designers have evolved the preppy style into a more street wear look. Polos are being paired with jeans and Jordan’s by guys. I’ve seen women wear cardigans with skinny jeans and stylish flats. Preppy clothing originated from a “stuffy” type of style but has become relaxed and used in various styling choices.
By no means does this encompass all the styles out there but they are some of the most poplar options. What’s your style?
