Today I came across an article from Huffington Post titled “Gap’s ‘Anorexic’ Mannequins Are An International Thing”
As if curvy women aren’t having enough of a hard time being equally represented in fashion ads and even mannequins, today I see the severity of this obsession with being hauntingly thin. While it is true that some people are naturally this skinny, to assume that this is the normal ‘model’ or standard shape of a woman is absurd.
I know girls in the sixth grade that would still be considered too fat to fit the clothes featured on these mannequins. Not only am I disturbed by how small the bodies on these mannequins are but what bothers me even more is that it is considered an “International thing” and according to the article the look is totally in for the fall. People always talk about how being overweight is so unhealthy and how we ‘fat’ people need to take care of our bodies while idolizing abnormally thin bodies and calling those bodies FIT. Interesting isn’t it?
Quickly I clicked on the “quick poll” on their site to see what people had to say and it surprised me that only a little over half (56.43%) of people found this ridiculous but at the same time that is a good thing. More people noticed and have confirmed that they would feel less inclined to shop there and that makes total sense to me. With more than 60% of American women being size 12 and up, we need to start seeing curvier mannequins not skinnier ones, there should be some real diversity in the modeling industry, this includes mannequins especially if retailers are looking for more women to spend their money.
Most women I know including myself will be turned off by going into a store who display anorexic models. If I don’t see it in my size, then why would I want to stop in to shop there? Attached please see some of the photos featured on this site and take their poll, let’s speak up and make a difference.
Please feel free to share your thoughts and comments on this as well below. We want to here from our curvy sisters!
