This year Jill Alexander Designs will be showcasing their garments during Full Figured Fashion Week™
How did you get into fashion?
I had my first job in fashion at the age of 14 while working as a stock girl in an elite children’s clothing store in Newport Beach,CA. I was definately bit by the fashion bug by that experience.
When did you realize you wanted to be a fashion designer?
It kind of evolved for me over time (the idea that she wanted to be a fashion designer). After college, I started off in Visual Merchandising for Ann Taylor. Working in stores on presentations customers would naturally ask me questions and I would make recommendations based on their figures. This eventually evolved into a personal styling career. When my children were old enough, I decided to go back to school to study the design end of fashion. After requests for custom pieces became more than I could handle I decided to focus on designing commercially.
Is there anyone or anything that inspired you?
So much of what I design is inspired by nature, but, the greatest inspiration for me is to look on a woman’s face when she puts on our clothes and confidence radiates out of her. You can tell she feels beautiful…it’s a powerful moment.
What are your thoughts on plus size fashion?
Plus size fashion has come a long way. I remember when the words “Plus Size” and “Fashion” were never used together. I think fashion in general can transform a person into being the person they were meant to be.
How does it feel to be apart of Full Figured Fashion Week™?
It feels incredible to be participating in FFFW. It’s an amazing opportunity not only for my company, but, for curvy women everywhere.
What inspired the garments that we will see during the Finale Fashion Show?
Many of the garments are from our new Fall Collection called “Steel Magnolia” but I’ve also created several Fashion Forward New York Nightlife looks that I hope to “wow” the audience with.
What kind of woman does your fashion appeal to?
My customer is usually a professional with an active social life that needs looks that transition from day to evening. She is confident, bold, and not afraid to be herself.
