Mia Amber Davis: The Impact She Left On The Plus Community

Mia Amber Davis, actress, television producer, Plus size model and plus community activist passed yesterday and the cries of disbelief can be felt all over the world.

Many of us remember seeing Mia Amber as Rhonda, the curvy statuesque beauty in the cult comedy Road Trip. Seeing her proudly display her curves in a featured film was the confidence booster that many of us plus size beauties needed. She made it okay to be proud of every curve but most of all she made it okay to be unapologetic for being a plus size girl and/or woman.

As a woman of many talents, acting was not the only thing she was known for. Mia Amber began her career in the entertainment industry as an intern and then production assistant for television shows such as Ricki Lake Show, Showtime at the Apollo and many others. It wasn’t long before she became a producer at the nationally syndicated Ricki Lake Show.

After making her mark in the world as a producer and an actress, she re-invented herself and gave plus size modeling a try. As a model she’s worked with a “who’s who” list of plus size industry greats. Mia Amber worked with Richard Metzger, Monif C., Queen Latifah for Curvation, Ashley Stewart, Lane Bryant and so many others.

She was later appointed the Creative Editor-At-Large for Plus Model Magazine and the face of The 2010 and 2011 campaign for The Fuller Woman Expo.

As we mourn the passing of our friend, inspiration and plus community trailblazer, it is important that we maintain her level of optimism. Our loss is great but her contribution to this movement is even greater.

My thoughts and prayers are with her family and close friends. The impact that this woman has had on the lives of so many is unparalleled to anything in the plus size community and for that she will forever be in our hearts.

UPDATE: According to E Online, Mia Amber Davis died of a blog clot.  Before passing, Mia had knee surgery to alleviate pain that she experienced from a Basketball injury while in college.  Despite going to a very reputable physician, she was announced dead within 24 hours of the surgery.

To honor and pay tribute to the life that Mia Amber David led, the June 2011 issue of Plus Model Magazine will be dedicated to her groundbreaking career.

Stephanie..she was one of the sweetest, beautiful, kindest woman there is in the plus size industry. When I first heard the news..tears overflowed my cheeks for this superb, gracious beautiful woman who befriended me in 2008 when I first met her at one of her workshops in nyc for modeling. Her advice, support and kindness for us in the industry won’t and can’t be replaced. I had the privelige to walk with Mia as one of the models in 2009 NYC’s Divbetic Makeover Event for an good cause for women suffering from diabetes. This was the Mia I grown to know and love. She always responded and kept in touch with you no matter what. Even she was a busy, she always find the time to reach out. I’m still in shock over her untimely death at an young age. She had a great bright shining star future ahead of her. She will forever be in our hearts for what she did for me and for all plus size/full figured women in the plus size industry.
