I was excited when Glee’s Puck started courting plus size classmate Lauren (played by Ashley Fink). I was even more excited to see him serenade the newest glee club member last month. Apparently, Rosie O’Donnell does not agree with the storyline and finds it hard to believe a guy like Puck is attracted to Lauren. She even voiced her opinions in a recent Access Hollywood interview:
“Every woman I know who’s heavy has very strong feelings about that storyline … They’re like, ‘Can you believe that? I think it’s horrible. That never happens in school. That character is so unlikable. Why didn’t they get a pretty heavy girl?’”
To say every woman has “strong feelings” is a bit extreme. Personally, I see nothing wrong with the storyline. As a plus size teen I had no problem getting attention from the male species in fact I dated a football player. I don’t think the storyline is a stretch and neither does Ashley Fink. She had this to say about Rosie’s comments:
“I’ll possibly address it with her in the future. If I see her, I might be like, ‘Woman, let’s talk about this. Don’t be jealous ’cause a big girl’s doing her thing on Glee.’ I love Rosie and I respect her opinion, so all I can say is that some of her comments were strange to me. But she was supportive originally, and I think she’s still supportive.”

I don’t think Rosie is jealous, I just think she’s opinionated. I’m not making excuses for her, but she’s always been outspoken on a number of things. And maybe due to her negative experiences growing up have made this storyline unbelievable to her. When we, who are younger, love it and embrace it.
Well said Monique……I do wish she spoke with Ashley directly but as you stated above Rosie is and will always be opinionated. We definitely live in a different time. I remember when plus size actresses were reduced to live in nannies or just playing mama. Now we have love interests and entire sitcoms created around us.
Here’s my thing, while I’m glad that ashley’s fink character has a boyfriend and confidence in herself, why does Amber Riley’s character get kicked to the background and regulated to tater tot stories gay boyfriend substitutes and songs that she either sings the background on, has collaborations, or utterly ridiculous lyrics like that “hell no” song that she gets to sing. Why is it Amber’s character always is grappling with herself image, food, or doing something to someones car? Her character is little more than filler even the two cheerleaders Santana and Brittany have gotten fuller more developed roles their characters have even evolved but Amber riley’s character is still marginalized and relegated to the background and as a huge fan for Amber I for one am more than a little upset about that it’s not even cool not even a little bit.
It’s because Amber’s black. That’s the reason why the creators of “Glee” cannot fathom seeing a plus-size black woman as the love interest. Maybe if “Glee” got some African-American writers on the show, they would know what to do with Amber’s character besides “filler details.” As far as Rosie O’Donnell is concerned, I think she’s jealous. When was the last time you saw a man paying attention to her? I think she needs to lighten up.
I thought the same thing Rosie did. Not only is the girl physically not the typical “pretty girl” she is so nasty and mean. It’s like – what on Earth is pleasant about this girl? How could anyone want to date her? If she was beautiful with the same personality, she would be labeled a “mean girl” and they would be writing stories about how it’s what’s on the inside that matters and her inside is ugly. Because this girl is unfortunately large, we are supposed to accept how she treats people so badly? Yeah, I don’t like this story either. And for those of you who it matters to, I am Rosie O’Donnell’s size and age.
