Recently the corporate world was all a buzz around the acquisition of The Huffington Post, the Internets most popular news source, by AOL for a cool $315 million in cash and stocks. Arianna Huffington, who co-founded the site with Kenneth Lerer in 2005, will take control of all of AOL’s editorial content as president and editor in chief of Huffington Post Media Group which was recently created. This means that Arianna will oversee all of AOL’s national, local and financial news operations, as well as AOL’s other entities such as MapQuest and Moviefone.
I often visit the Huffington Post. Although it is viewed as a news source touching on many genres, it feels more like a editorial community. Readers are able to log on and comment on any story that is posted. You begin to become familiar with people who comment often and eventually look forward to their commentary. Many bloggers give their unique perspective on current events that adds a refreshing twist.
The Post has given voice to the curvy community as well. We are always eager to read the musings of the curvy comedic force Erica Watson as she expounds on life as she knows it. Almost weekly you see a post from unlikely sources supporting the movement. Just recently Bonnie Fuller of Hollywoodlife.com wrote her personal commentary “Aren’t you sick of too skinny girls?” , a candid plea for realistic size models in the media.
Arianna has changed the way we read the news online. Now that she has taken over such a vast media empire, I look forward to seeing her stamp across several platforms, which would include content from and about the plus community.
