Quanitra Terry is a designer to watch. Not just because she designs for plus size women. Without a collection, Quanitra became the first plus size designer to be included in Detroit Fashion Week, one of the premier fashion events in Detroit. She was just that good. A recent graduate from The International Academy of Design in Troy, Michigan; Quanitra is fully immersed in her craft.
She is the C.E.O. and Creative Director of “Louvenia Curves” fashion house who’s mission is “to provide fabulous, sexy, sophisticated clothing that compliments the woman of size and encourage full figured woman to step out of what society thinks will work for them and make their own decisions upon what makes them look and feel beautiful” .
I hosted her 1st solo fashion show in November, 2010. I was very impressed with her creative process and the concepts behind her Spring/Summer line which used vibrant colors and architecture to evoke the feeling of the Miami night life. I briefly sat down with Quanitra to get to know a little more about her.
Why did you decide to design for plus size women?
I always wanted to design for full figured women because I am a full figured woman myself and I have been for most of my life. I find that most designers don’t design for full figured woman and the ones that do leave less to be desired. I want to be the designer that accentuates a woman’s curves no matter what shape or size they are instead of covering up their body. I believe that all woman should have the option to feel beautiful in what they wear and not be forced into what society believes is suitable for a plus size woman.
How long have you been designing?
I used to design my homecoming dresses when I was in high school and my mother would sew them so I always had the desire to design but I officially have been designing for about 3 years.
What was your experience during Detroit Fashion Week?
I thought Detroit Fashion Week was a great experience because I learned a lot about the importance of presentation quality for an audience. I also enjoyed the press parties and events that allowed me to make connections to influential individuals in the industry.
April 9 will be the debut of the Fall/Winter Collection for Louvenia Curves. I will be front and center! To learn more about this burgeoning designer, visit her website www.louveniacurves.com

It’s pretty cool that she got to be in the Detroit Fashion Week before she even had a collection. That’s quite an accomplishment!
