Musicians being bit by the acting bug is nothing new. In fact, artists who have successfully crossed over have made a name for themselves in a completely different way.
In a recent interview in Sister 2 Sister Magazine, Jazmine Sullivan revealed that she was starring in a new movie, Red Tails about the Tuskegee Airmen. She goes on to say, ” I play a jazz singer. It’s a small role but it was very intimidating. It was the first time I had been to Prague, where we shot, and the first time I did a movie….so a lot of things I wasn’t used to. I had to overcome fear while there. The cast was really sweet and I had a good time. I won’t say I have the acting bug but I enjoyed being challenged. Sometimes as an artist you can get in a rut doing the same thing.”
Other Musicians who have made a name for themselves include:
Will Smith- As the Box office King, he is the most successful rapper turned actor. This Fresh Prince is so good that he commands theaters during many 4th of July weekends.
Queen Latifah- She turned her powerful stand up lyrics into powerful stand up characters and made it okay for a plus size woman to star in a romatic comedy.
Mark Walberg- He’s been acting for so long, I don’t know if I should call him Marky Mark (the rapper) or Mark Walberg (the actor). After his early 90′s career in music, he has successfully re-packaged himself as a valid talent in film.
Beyonce- Her star status has added to the success of many films but it was her performance (vocally and theatrically) in DreamGirls that made people start to take notice.
Jennifer Hudson- Although she starred in DreamGirls before she released her first album, she’s a singer. Her vocal ability got her the role and her acting skills won her an Oscar.
LL Cool J- Ladies Love James Todd Smith (the actor) just as much as they love him as the rapper.
Ice T- This talented and convincing gangster rapper shocked and confused his fans when he went from fighting against the police to being one of them on television.
