Style: “A quality of imagination and individuality expressed in one’s actions and tastes.”
This definition is a fancy way of saying, style is all about the way YOU express yourself. That’s the beautiful thing about fashion; individuality is the link that binds the preppy, with the sexy chic, with the business savvy. Your personal flavor or diva funk (as I like to call it) makes or breaks your look.
Being a young plus size diva I struggled for a long time trying to find a style that worked best for me. I needed a look that I could feel comfortable and secure on my worse days. I would look at my peers and try to mimic what I saw. I became discouraged, because what my size 8 classmates wore, my size 18 couldn’t fit. Then I heard a quote that changed my outlook, “You have no choice but to be who you are, everyone else is taken.” I no longer became a clone; I walked into my Queendom and began to make my own fashion statements. I wasn’t just another cute “big girl” I was expressing myself through my actions and taste, creating a Tova style, and you can do the same.
So many people come to me and say “I need to find my style, what can I do, what steps do I take to look my best?” At first I would laugh it off, and point them to the nearest fashion magazine. But after the first 20 times of that question being addressed to me, I sat down and really analyzed the process that I went through. The ABC’S of fashion is a quick and easy way to bring out the fashion icon in you.
A- Attitude: whatever you choose to wear, you must have attitude, and I’m not talking about a bad one either (you know, the roll your neck and smack your lips type of attitude). Attitude is having confidence that when you walk out of the store, you will feel good about yourself, your outfit, and will rock it with confidence. Always make sure that you are the first person that tells yourself “I’m beautiful, sexy and nobody can do Me like ME!”
B- Bargain: Don’t let the fashion stylist fool you, when it comes to shopping, you don’t have to spend all of your life savings. You can look in the high fashion magazines, see a look that inspires you, and go to your local department stores and consignment shops to find some of the exact same things for hundreds less. But when getting inspiration, remember to keep your individuality.
C- Compliment: When buying any article of clothing, always make sure that your outfit compliments you. Make sure that all of your strong points on your body are the main focus. You have a wonderful neck line; don’t be afraid of the v-necks, beautiful legs wear knee length dresses, and skirts. If the stomach area is your problem, wear patterns and wraps that camouflage (my favorite). If you happen to be “Bootylicious” don’t be afraid to get a nice pair of jeans that compliment that area.
With the right attitude, fabulous bargains, and clothing that compliment you best, you are sure to make a statement, and have the style that you always wanted. Style YOU.
