When a celebrity dies, their fans often mourn for them and depending on the celebrity, the affect of their passing is felt years after theri passing. In an effort to use their celebrity status for a worthy cause, several celebrities have joined Alicia Keys in signing off of social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter on Wednesday (World AIDS Day). The goal is to raise $1 million dollars and once this goal is met, the participants will log back on.
The new campaign is called Digital Life Sacrifice which is an extension of Keys’ charity, Keep a Child Alive. Celebrities such as Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Usher Jennifer Hudson, Ryan Seacrest, Kim and Khloe Kardashian, Elijah Wood, Serena Williams, Janelle Monae and Keys’ husband, Swizz Beatz are all involved. They each filmed their “last tweet and testament” videos and will appear in ads showing them lying in coffins to represent what the campaign calls their digital deaths.
“It’s not that people don’t care or it’s not that people don’t want to do something, it’s that they never thought of it quite like that”, Keys said. “The campaign, she added, puts the disease in perspective.”
