At What Age Would You Allow Your Daughter To Wear Makeup?

Having a son has it’s perks. Although I’m saddened by the fact that I can’t dress him up to look like my twin, thoughts such as “When I should let my child wear make up?” or “When should she be allowed to wear heels?”, are followed by sighs of relief because I don’t have to make those decisions.

When I was a child times were different (I think) and when my mom was a child, I’m sure the world was more innocent than it is now but what is a parent to do if they have children growing up in today’s day and age (especially if they have a daughter).

The decisions a parent makes regarding their child are usually based on the child’s maturity level but what if your child is maturing faster than you want them to. When they’re a little girl, playing dress up is cute. You let them put on a little lip gloss, wear plastic heels and wrap a fake fur around them as they prance around the house with their tiara’s on….it’s cute, isn’t it?  Unfortunately, the cuteness and innocence wears off around the age of 9  (especially if she’s a chubby girl) because she’s starting to look a little older as well as devolop physically.

In your eyes she’s still a child but when she goes out the world she’s viewed a little differently. Lipgloss or any amount of make up on a pre-teen can add years to her face…..years that will have you as a parent nervous, so what do you do. How do you handle the little girl who is becoming a young lady and wants to play dress up as a pre-teen?

Some people say 12 is an okay age to allow your daughter to wear make up, while others say 15 or older. What do you think? At what age would you allow your daughter to wear make up?

  1. I noticed my stepdaughter started wearing makeup around age 14, at first I was a little uneasy because her body was changing and I already knew that she was getting boys’ attention so makeup to me just added to it and it did make her look older (which you know I didn’t want for her). There were times I would tell her if I thought she had a little too much on but I never told her to take it off completely because I wanted her to feel comfortable around me with how she wanted to dress and look, you know freedom of expression is big with pre-teens and teens so I feel as long as you give them a little room with some rules, then maybe they won’t sneak or maybe they won’t go overboard. I expressed how too much makeup at an early age may age your face faster and I also told her the importance of not going to sleep on it either. For young ladies, lipgloss is good enough in my opinion but I noticed with alot of girls they like the mascaras, eyeliners and color shadows (that to me is for an older teen) and not too heavy either because it can attract the wrong kind of attention if you feel me. Still, I can remember sneaking my mom’s eyeliner on at 12 and 13 and figuring out creative ways to get away with super pink lips (like sucking on a raspberry now & later and letting it stain my lips) all so I could blame it on the candy when my mom told me to take that mess off my lips…LOL! I know I sound old now but um yeah, girls are a little more delicate to raise because they start developing so quickly and now it seems like they are expected to look more provocative too…..from super short shorts and mini skirts to fishnets….I know I am getting a little off topic but some things are just meant for the older girl and that is what we as parents, aunts, sisters and grandmas have to let them know (even if they temporarily get mad)….because we have their best interest at heart.
