Plus Size models protest Australian Fashion Week due to exclusion by local designers.
With so many models with curves being embraced around the world, it’s only natural that Australia would follow suit and feature plus size models during fashion week. Although it’s the fair thing to do, it is not what the designers being featured opted to do.
According to Big Gal Models (BGM) director Darrianne Donnelly, the Australian fashion industry has taken major steps in the wrong direction. Last year 18 BGM models participated in showcase specifically for plus-size models during Australian Fashion Week but this year no fuller models were invited to participate.
It is seems that designers who participated in this year’s event are unapologetic about not including larger models in their segment. “Nobody is going to tell me how to pick models,” Alex Perry told the Daily Telegraph.
In an effort to take a stand a group of plus-size models wearing T-Shirts with slogans such as “I love my curves” and “We love real women” staged a protest outside an Australian Fashion Week event on Thursday May 6th.
