Academy Award winner and comedienne MoNique has often made reference to being molested as a child by her brother. Her past is what many believe she relied upon when playing the disturbed and equally hurt Mary Jones in the 2009 movie, Precious.
On Monday April 19th, Gerald Imes (her older brother) and her parents appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Although MoNique declined to respond with a comment, she gave Oprah her blessing to interview her family members. Gerald used his time on the show to clear the air and let it be known that he wanted to apologize to her for what he did. The abuse which went on for 2 years, started when MoNique was 7 or 8 and when Gerald was 13.
“I abused and betrayed the trust of another sibling, my sister, my blood sister,” Imes said as he apologized to his sister publicly. He continues, “hopefully somewhere, somehow as siblings we can come back together as brother and sister.”
Gerald Imes decided to appear on Winfrey’s show to apologize to MoNique and hopefully bring their family back together. Imes said he himself was molested and he was using drugs and alcohol at age 11.
