Plus Size Clothing Line, LucieLu Hopes to Appeal to All Women

After more than 11 years as a partner and the principal buyer  for plus size  clothing e-tailer B&Lu, Lucie Sholl announced that she has launched her own line of apparel for full figured women: LucieLu.

“I’m looking to expand the options available in this fairly limited niche market,” said Sholl. “I’m going after more of a one-of-a-kind look, and I’m featuring sizes that are hard to find, all the way up to 5X for many styles.”

LucieLu.com, a plus size clothing online boutique, offers casual dresses and skirts, tops and tees, cardigans and jackets, denim, and accessories. The pieces are timeless, feminine, and cut to flatter, designed to be mixed and matched, layered, and dressed up or down. Many are made from moderate-weight fabrics in colors that can be worn year-round.

Sholl says she often draws inspiration from treasures of the past: vintage prints antique patterns, watercolor paintings. One of the line’s signature pieces, the Eau Claire Dress, gets its boutique feel from the screen print that adorns the front: an ornate chandelier. Another knockout look, the Antoinette Dress, features a black lace–trimmed bodice and a boldly patterned skirt with a vintage-y feel. Both are romantic and unusual—not the kind of cookie cutter clothes you’d get from a mass merchant online.

Prices for the LucieLu line are surprisingly affordable. Dresses start at $38, tops at $26, jeans at $42. Sholl plans to add to the line seasonally and expand size ranges over time, offering as many pieces as possible in hard-to-find sizes 4X and 5X.

Ultimately, Sholl says, the LucieLu line is driven by fashion, not size. “My clothes are designed to appeal to all women, but they just happen to come in sizes 1X and up,” she said. “I’m most proud of the fact that the pieces feel like real finds: something fresh and unexpected.”

Sholl’s biggest hope is that once customers find LucieLu online, they won’t keep it all to themselves. Boutique clothing in hard-to-find sizes? That’s definitely worth talking about.
