In celebration of Women’s History Month, teacher Tonya Uibel gave her third grade class a very specific and controversial assignment. A 16 page packet was sent home with the students to alert parents that all students in her third grade class would have to participate in the activity, since it would be graded as an “end of unit” assignment. Part of the assignment required the students including young boys to dress as women in a now-canceled fashion show to honor Women’s History Month.
For those unsure of what to wear the packet also included suggestions of how students may dress, including fashions from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s like bell bottoms, poodle skirts and cheerleader outfits. Photographs of fashion icons like Twiggy and Madonna are also included.
The School Superintendent Michael Livengood has canceled the fashion show which had been scheduled for Friday at Maude Wilkins Elementary School, due to parents outrage over the matter.
The assignment has been changed and students will now be asked to a draw a picture of a person dressed in clothing from a specific time period as the lesson plan’s culminating project.
I can understand how a parent would be outraged especially if their child is in tears over the matter but what if your son didn’t care but you do? Would you allow your child to participate in this type of assignment despite your dissatisfaction?
