Erykah Badu Has Parents Wanting An Apology

Last weekend the internet world buzzed more than usual over the release of Erykah Badu’s newest video, “Window Seat”.  This neo soul artist revealed a very controversial video to accompany the lead single from her newest album, “New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh”.

Fans who are familiar with Erykah Badu and her unique performance style and eclectic appearance aren’t surprised with the message her lead single is conveying.  What’s surprising is the video.  Taken in one shot and without a crew, Erykah is shown in Dallas singing the single while removing her clothing layer by layer. By the time she finally gets to Dealey Plaza (the place where JFK was assassinated) she is completely naked.  To make the video even more dramatic, she is shot in the head and instead of blood oozing from her head, the word GROUPTHINK emerges in blue.  According to the singer, she was speaking out against “groupthink,” a psychological term referring to a group of people who sacrifice individuality in order to embrace collective thought and avoid conflict.

While the single itself is though provoking, more people are talking about the roundness of her derriere. There has also been a great amount of speculation regarding Erykah Badu being arrested for indecent exposure but at this time, it looks like she’s in the clear.  According to Fox News, some parents have come forward displaying their dissatisfaction with Badu’s choice to shoot a video in broad daylight without giving spectators a heads up.

What do you think?  Does she owe the parents and children an apology?  Or was she within her 1st amendment rights?

At this time the “official” video has been removed but take a look at the clips in the coverage from Kelly’s Court as the panel debate whether she should be charged for what she considers as being “creative.

I don’t think Erykah should apologize to anyone.Parents can set their own rules for their own offspring. If your children are allowed to watch or listen to music videos, made for an adult audience, then the problem doesn’t rest in the performance, but in the home.

Eryiah is an adult, a performer, and has not set herself up as a “role model”. It’s time adults stopped apologizing for being adults.
