Last Sunday night on the Barbara Walters special, Oscar winner and comedian Mo’Nique mentioned the fact that she was in an open marriage. This was the 2nd time I had heard Mo’Nique speak of her open marriage. This has been in constant debate on whether it’s right or wrong. The definition of right or wrong depends on how you choose to define “open”. The standard definition of an “open” marriage is where one or both spouses openly date other people. Mo’Nique’s definition is completely different. So why all the criticism?
Let’s take a deep look at what she said. She said that if her or her husband were to sleep with someone else it would not be a “deal breaker”. Nowhere in that statement did she say he could date other people or that they were swingers. She actually is living by her wedding vows, which do not say “Til adultery do us part”.
With the divorce rate being so high, couples tend to break up over the simpliest things, so I applaud Mo’nique and her husband for having a relationship built on open communication, true friendship, and knowing what’s important. She even mentions cheating being beyond a physical level. This being her 3rd marriage, I would think she may actually know what she’s doing this time. So again, why are people so up in arms about what someone else does in their marriage?

“We’ve been best friends for over 25 years, and we truly know who we are. Oftentimes, people get into marriages and they don’t know who they’re laying next to. I’m very comfortable and secure with my husband.”

REGARDING THE SNIPPET OF HER INTERVIEW:THAT’S WHAT I’VE BEEN SAYING ALL ALONG! “KNOW YOUR PARTNER!!” I THINK IN THIS DAY AND AGE WE ARE SO QUICK TO WANT TO HAVE THE SILLY FAIRY-TALES WE READ WHEN WE WERE 5, THAT WE FORGET THAT WE ACTUALLY NEED TO KNOW THE PERSON WHO IS GETTING SO OVERLY INTIMATE WITH US.1 YEAR…2 YEARS OR 4 YEARS MAY NOT BE ENOUGH…TO TRULY COMPREHEND THE MIND BEHIND THE FACE…THOUGH WE WILL NEVER ACTUALLY TRULY BE ABLE TO READ ONE ANOTHER’S MINDS…WE SHOULD AT LEAST UNDERSTAND THE MANNER IN WHICH WE THINK…WHAT MAKES US HAPPY AND MOST IMPORTANTLY HAT DOESN’T…
