Oscars and plus size women are two things that normally don’t go together. For so long, the standard of beauty in entertainment has mirrored the way society thinks. Instead of standing on the sidelines while others go after their dreams, many plus size women have delivered Oscar worthy performances and have been rewarded for their work by being nominated or winning the infamous golden statue. The following women dominated their field long before being plus size and proud was in style.

Hattie McDaniel
Hattie McDaniel was an actress/singer/songwriter and the first African American performer to win an Academy Award. She won the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role of Mammy in Gone with the Wind. (1939)
Kathy Bates rose to prominence with her performance in Misery (1990), for which she won both the Academy Award for Best Actress. She starred in Primary Colors (1998), for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for About Schmidt (2002).
Jennifer Hudson After being eliminated off Fox’s American Idol, this recording artist made a name for herself on her own terms. She made her film debut in the 2006 film Dreamgirls and won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance. (2006)

Queen Latifah, is a rapper, actress, and singer. Queen Latifah’s work in music, film and television has earned her critical acclaim. She received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her role as Matron “Mama” Morton in the Oscar-winning musical Chicago. (2002)
