One of my top tips for looking fantastic in winter at any age, shape or size is layering. A big bonus to layering is that is can keep you warm when you are outside and inside. Layering is also great because it helps to achieve a more ‘together’ look as opposed to just working a standard trousers and top combo. Layers are what set the stylish apart in the winter.
One of the main questions that women ask me is how to do layers and when the weather gets colder, it’s the perfect time to start layering up so here are my top tips on creating stylish, together looks through layering: -
- Well fitting cami tops and vests under shirts and blouses with a couple of buttons undone, or under a deeper v-neck top will provide warmth but even better this look enhances a woman’s figure in all the best ways. This look is especially one to try to for bustier women who find it difficult to get shirts to fit across their chest as it avoids buttons stretching and popping open, but looks great on all shapes.
- Gilets over jumpers and jersey tops with jeans, trousers, skirts are great for women who are pear shaped and therefore have a good upper body and posture but aren’t so crazy on their lower body. The gilet balances the figure and draws the eye up and away from hips, thighs and bum so is an ideal solution.
- Waterfall style or longer cardigans that skim the body worn over tunic dresses with opaque tights and boots are brilliant for women who have legs they still want to show off in winter.
- V neck jumpers, tank tops or waistcoats over shirts and blouses can be worn with trousers for a smart work look or with jeans for a preppy weekend trend. This is an especially great alternative for women with a tummy (as long as the length of the jumper sits mid-tummy) which will give the appearance of a flatter, smaller belly.
- Shawls and ponchos with jeans or trousers look brilliant on taller ladies with longer ladies and are also great cover ups for women who feel a little more self conscious about any lumps and bumps. Wear with more fitted trousers or jeans that enhance the shape of the leg such as leggings, tights, skinny jeans or slim cut bootlegs.
- Sleeveless knitwear worn over long sleeved jumpers, shirts, blouses and jersey tops can make women look taller and leaner and keep the body warm. Either choose a bright winter colour cardigan such as purple, teal or mustard and wear over more basic colours such as grey, charcoal, brown, black or white OR buy a basic colour cardigan such as charcoal and brighten up with a patterned or coloured top underneath to achieve more price per wear.
For easy winter style you can also look for inspiration from the autumn / winter catwalk shows who offered a sigh of relief for women everywhere this year with accessories that were chic, colourful and practical! Arm warmers, long gloves, snoods, super length scarves and hats look snug yet elegant. The best thing about accessories for women is that anyone can add accessories to their wardrobe at minimal cost and they instantly update your look! Plus accessories fit you no matter how much weight you gain over the festive period (darn those mince pies!) A stylist’s ideal winter solution!
