Losing Weight Becomes A Family Affair For One Big Happy Family
While speaking with Thicksational this morning I was asked if I had ever heard of reality show One Big Happy Family. Of course my reply was no. So I decided to do a little research on the reality show that premiered on TLC on December 29, 2009.
The show follows the Coles, a close knit family of four as they deal with life and the struggles of being morbidly obese. With a combined weight of 1,400 pounds, each half-hour episode follows them on their weightloss journey and quest for a healthier lifestyle.
Using comedy and love, One Big Happy Family shows how the Coles rally behind one another and explore the causes of their obesity so they can keep the weight off. Unlike other weightloss shows (The Biggest Loser, Ruby) One Big Happy Family does not have a nutritionist or personal trainer to help them reach their goals. They only have each other. According to TLC, “It’s a long and emotional process full of trial and error and late night “cheats,” but through it all, they have each other.”
Meet The Coles:
•Norris, 41 and 340 lbs., is a stay-at-home Dad who cooks, cleans and loves taking care of his wife and kids almost as much as his best friend-the family dog, Coal;
•His wife, Tameka, 36 and 380 lbs., supports the family and manages to be both the disciplinarian and the comedian in the house;
•Amber, 16 and 348 lbs., is a thoughtful young girl who loves to write. Entering her senior year in high school, she is about to start dating and getting ready for college;
•Shayne, 14 and 308 lbs., is a rising sophomore in high school and always the life of the party.
I am interested in seeing if this a show that is intended to motivate others or to poke fun at a serious problem. While I understand the premise behind shows such as this and More To Love, if done improperly, they come across as cold and tactless and that’s the last thing anyone needs to experience when having their lives and struggles displayed on television for the world to see.
