A while back we reported that Jennifer Hudson would play Winnie Mandela in an upcoming biopic. Apparently, The Creative Workers Union of South Africa is against foreign actors telling their nation’s stories. They feel that it hinders their developing film industry, and they want Hudson to drop out of the film immediately.
“This decision must be reversed, it must be stopped now,” union secretary general Oupa Lebogo said in The Times. “If the matter doesn’t come up for discussion, we will push for a moratorium to be placed on the film.”
I remember seeing a preview for the South African based Invictus which stars Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela so I’m forced to ask, “What’s really going on?” Does this have anything to do with her being a woman?
This will not be the first time a foreign actor or actress will be in a role that tells another countries story. At least she can act.
