Lupe Yoli was a talented singer and performer who became famous for her unique on-stage style and incredible vocal range. Yoli was an innovator. In contemporary society she would be called a diva. What Madonna became for modern popular music, Lupe Yoli was for Latin Soul in the 1960’s. Guadalupe Victoria Yoli was born in Santiago, Cuba and was later given the nickname “La Lupe”. Yoli moved to the United States in 1962 after developing fame in Havana, Cuba while working with her first husband as part of a group and later becoming a soloist in a Havana club. She recorded twenty-two albums, many of which went gold. She performed alongside Tito Puente and Mongo Santamaria during the 1960’s and 1970’s. She also performed with Celia Cruz who is also well known in America for her vocal ability. By the end of La Lupe’s career, however, she was forced to move to a homeless shelter with her daughter after a fire burned down her apartment and her husband became mentally ill. In 1992, the queen of Latin Soul died of a cardiac arrest.
Guadalupe Yoli is an important figure in the Latin community because her music transcended borders and reached the ears of listeners in the United States, helping to popularize Latin soul in America. If La Lupe was a performer in contemporary society, then she may not have been subjected to the same opposition from people who did not like her performance style. For this reason, though, La Lupe should be remembered because she went against societal norms to do what pleased her at the risk of losing fans. Her disregard for these norms is inspiring; it proves that one should not orient their lives to suit other people; they should do what pleases them. Ultimately, someone will enjoy what you are doing or will respect your courage and strength.
