Is Size Acceptance A Trending Topic?

dv1916044Some people feel that the backlash against size 0 catwalk models will have a negative affect on society. They feel it is encouraging young girls’ to have bad eating habits, and creating an unrealistic image. The issue doesn’t look like it will be going away any time soon however as more and more women are looking to plus size clothing to fit their body shape instead of the ‘stick thin’ model images we see in magazines I’m certain people will be more vocal regarding their disapproval of size acceptance. Furthermore, do you think that size acceptance is a trend right now, the thing to do?
For the people that only see negative results by us and the world embracing our curves, what is your response? Are they completely missing the point or are they’re concerns valid?

i think one of the main points in our message is learning to love who you are regardless of your size. because if you dont learn how to love yourself at 360 you wont be able to when you’re 200 lbs lighter. it’s the emotional and mental health i think they are missing. the opponents of fat acceptance are only pushing healthy physical living. but no one is addressing your mental and emotional needs. there are people who lose the weight and regret doing so. i believe our message is to thrive in your curves regardless of how big or small you are. love youself and you’re body and if you can do that at your heaviest then you will be able to do it at your smallest.

  2. To answer the above-mentioned question I would say yes, size acceptance is a trending topic and I am glad because there is just too much sizeism in the world and that means that we are making progess. We all know that “trends”sell and I am sure that one of the reasons size acceptance is getting noticed is because it sells magazines ie, (Glamour) and it is selling clothes and makeup. Finally, it seems as if full-figured women who are in the spotlight are being celebrated more and more as big, healthy and beautiful. Women like Jill Scott, Queen Latifah, Jordin Sparks, Tocarra etc. I don’t think that I ever seen a full figured woman do a commercial for Cover Girl before I saw Queen Latifah and I was like …now this is inspiring. We are all beautiful in so many unique ways but sometimes when only one look is embraced, then society begins to have this perception of how one should look. If we all looked the same it would be a boring world.
I agree with T Marlene about the importance of loving yourself and your body at whatever size. It starts with a healthy mind and you have to love and accept yourself first to exude confidence. When I was a size 14, I didn’t embrace my body and wished I was smaller all the time and now I am an 18 and I look at those pics and say… wow my body looked great! It makes me laugh because I have finally learned to accept and love myself at this size…but then a 14 was still too big for me ..so it really starts in the mind.
Hopefully we can continue to make more progress by speaking out and embracing and celebrating all the women and men who are making a difference in the plus community. We have to knock down all of the barriers, not just in fashion but also in work force. I read somewhere that thinner women get paid more across the board and if that is true, that is just wrong….but that is just another topic…LOL!

Ladies keep on loving yourself and if you are not happy with yourself, let it be for your own reasons, not for what society says. Begin to work on yourselves from the inside out: emotionally, spiritually…etc…make move to be the best you. I love Venus because just as T Marlene said above our message is to “thrive in your curves”… and that is just what I hope to do! God Bless!

  3. I agree that size acceptance is a trending topic and the optimist in my loves it but the pesimist in me is suspicious of the intentions of Glamour, Marie Claire and others. I often wonder if and when size acceptance is no longer a trending topic, they will still be advocates willing to stand alone if that’s what it takes.

  4. Goody says:

i think that the real value of this “movement” comes for each individual in our daily lives.

if we call out and challenge and don’t allow the negativity on a daily basis

if we capitalize on the intentions good or bad of the media and publications and keep the issue on the forefront then this will not be just a trend.

  5. Laurie I completely agree with you. I feel like the media attempts to dictate the way we are portrayed and what we should or should not be doing but no one can walk in our shoes and set our standards better than we can.

  6. Laurie Todd says:

I believe it is time for the plus size population to grandstand our abilities and stop allowing tv and magazines to tell us who we are, what we can/can not do, and how we should feel about our bodies. They say we are not fit (in more ways than one) but the truth is- we are fit, both physically and socially. I have seen women over 300 pounds walking 5k marathons and women considered overweight running and finishing triathlons. I think body acceptance is saying more than accept- I think it is saying we are more than our bodies, and our bodies do not define us or our abilities.

  7. Hidi says:

Yes, I do feel “Size Acceptance” is being treated as a trend. These are human beings we are encouraging to accept and love themselves not products. This is the concern I have with how the media and clothing companies ‘ approach the “size acceptance movement”. Like someone said above, it does sell clothing and makeup, which is understandable; however, I sometimes wonder about the companies intent when “celebrating” plus size with their products. For example, Target introduce a plus size line in their stores. What took them so long? Why now and not before? Fat people will never go away. We are here to stay. Why? Because everyone is DIFFERENT in body shape and size.

Please do not get confuse with what I have said, I LOVE the accomplishments the plus size community has made thus far in our struggles for size acceptance. I wish us continue success and breaking down of doors. Kisses and hugs :)

  8. Eunice says:

Unfortunately our big break came in the form of a trend, that although appreciated, has me feeling bitter. I love that the world is finally speaking, at least for now, in favor of size acceptance but I can’t help but feel that our huge break into the world should have come from someone who advocated size acceptance from the beginning, someone who acknowledged and applauded our differences all along. It’s wonderful that Glamour and other magazines are now positive advocates, but they weren’t from the beginning. They’re being credited for something revolutionary even though it’s been going on for a long while behind the scenes. I suppose I should just appreciate the effort and live on with my life, but I want to be sure these mediums will stick by our sides forever and not just for now because its popular.

  9. Laurie Ann Todd says:

@Eunice, I hope part of our power will be in making sure they can NOT turn back because WE are not a fad or fashion statement. We are deserving people who are tired of not having or getting all that we deserve. If they hop on this band wagon, they had better be sure they have an understanding that there is NO falling from or getting off of it. That has to be part of our job and goal to make sure no one gets away with exploiting us.

  12. Olga says:

To me a trend reminds me of a scarf choice for the fall. We are people with feelings and us being over a size 6 up to whatever size we see fit is not here to be accepted but respected.

I don’t need anyone to accept me into their world. I do see more magazines and designers finally seeing that they are no making the high sales due to the fact the there are more fat, and yes i said the word fat right with the proud women consumers demanding fashion for their curves and if they want to make some money they best get on that drawing board and make up some plus size outfits, right quick.

We full figure women and plus size men aren’t sitting at home quiet anymore. We are screaming out that we are done with ignorance and the noise we create is being heard loud and clear.

Love this topic, hot, hot and hot!
