I stretched wayyyyy more than I did the previous day to make sure I didn’t repeat the Charlie horses in both legs. Day two goes a bit better. Throughout the event we had several spots where local residents came out of their houses to generously supply us with cheers, signs, cold water or Gatorade, candy or chips…and plenty of hi-5s, smiles, and thank you/s. Cancer survivors coming out of their houses saying thank you for walking with tears in their eyes. You realize this is why you’re doing something so crazy. Those were the times that provided the extra boost we needed to make that last 3 miles before going back to camp. One resident even let people in their home to use their bathroom.
I’m in so many random pictures, its crazy. Every 3 miles or so there were pit stops or grab n go’s where they had bananas, oranges, animal crackers, granola bars, potato chips, string cheese, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, water and Gatorade. Yeah, they overfed us. We probably all gained weight! Everyone is so nice, and caring. We’re cheering each other on. There were cars driving by honking for us or blasting music to get us going.
There were times I wanted to give up. I had a moment where I broke down by myself. Once again, I remind you this is the most physical thing I’ve ever put my body through. By night’s end, I was walking around our hotel room like a 90 yr old woman. And then the next morning the 80 yr old woman was still making it with her white hat and her cool stride. She put us all to shame. Lol.
