You Say What You Wear

monique22Monday Night was the debut of the “Mo’Nique” Show, the late night talk show on BET with comedianne Mo’Nique as host. Watching the show it was obvious that she was filled with joyful emotions as she made history as the first woman of color to have her own show on BET.

Each time she danced and walked across stage, an image kept catching my attention. Upon turning around and shaking her rear end, I realized that image was a pair of pink and glittery lips against her black dress. At first I thought “How cute, she’s making a fashion statement”. Then it occurred to me that she may be trying to say something. If she is trying to say something, I wonder what it was? Perhaps she’s telling her doubters to kiss her assets. If that was the message, I believe it came across loud and clear.

When we wear clothing with certain logos, what are we “really” saying? If I wear a ‘Baby Phat’ t-shirt with a kitten on it am I implying that I’m a sexy feline? If a person wears some pants with “Juicy Couture” going across their assets, is it safe to assume that they consider themselves, ‘Juicy’?

If we wear clothing with certain messages or logos displayed, can we blame a person for assuming that we’re attempting to send a certain message?
