Have you ever gone to another state and felt out of place? It’s one thing to feel out of place but the last thing you want to do is look out of place. The next time you go to a big city such as New York City, think about what signals you give off and try not to look like a tourist.
Here are a couple of pointers:
Don’t ask strangers to take pictures of you. This may lead to your digital camera being stolen or your roommate’s digital camera being stolen, or your grandma’s digital camera being stolen, etc., etc., etc.
Don’t carry around a checklist of places to see and things to do. If you cannot remember it, then it’s fate for it to wait.
Don’t look lost. Always look like you know where you are going, even if you do not. Looking at a map while you walk should definitely be avoided. However, don’t be afraid to ask for directions. New Yorkers are surprisingly helpful in this area.
Don’t fall into tourist traps. Paying $7 for a slice of pizza would warrant a slap from my mother. No pizza in New York is worth seven bucks a slice.
Don’t fall into clichés. When you walk you CAN look at people, there is more to the clothing color spectrum than black, and being rude isn’t compulsory.
The final tip: Don’t let your first impression be your final judgment. The dirt, grime and smell will grow on you.
