Tell me about yourself.
By day, I am a dedicated instructor of “American Federal Government” at Rose State College. Yet, I split my nights reading and working to change the community. As an avid reader who reviews books for www.myspace.com/realpageturners, I spend time promoting authors and encouraging people to read African American literature. Reading isn’t my only passion, I co-wrote a textbook entitled, Strategies That Empower People for Success in College and Life; co-editor of Delta Girls: Stories of Sisterhood; and contributor to Violets. My online name is Deltareviewer, and I must be reading a page turning novel or giving suggestions on how to make America better right now!
I spend family time watching movies, putting together jigsaw puzzles, and watching football with my husband and two daughters. Known for my quick wit and contagious laughter, I have dedicated an endless amount of time and hard work to support the programs of her beloved sorority, DELTA SIGMA THETA Sorority, Inc., and I currently serve the community as President of the Oklahoma City Urban League Young Professionals. This up and coming year, I look forward to promoting my platform based on educating individuals about the importance of civic engagement.
What motivated you to run for Miss Plus America 2009?
I wanted to do something I’ve never done before and to be an inspiration for my girls…showing them that ‘plus-sized’ ladies can be DIVA beautiful too!
Do you feel that being “plus-sized” makes you less beautiful or worthy as a woman? Why or why not?
I know that being “plus-sized” enhances my beauty and reaffirms my self-worth a million times over. Truly, I can do anything that my heart desires and God approves regardless of my size or financial limitations.
What can you do today to help other women understand that beauty is not about a “size or age”?
Simply by living as an e xample…age, size, and outwardly appearance are determined in your mind, knowledge of self is POWER!
How did it feel during your crowning moment?
I was in a state of amazement, even though I came to win! The moment was surreal. I truly felt that God had opened the heavens and smiled upon me.
Do you have any advice for other women interested in becoming Miss Plus America?
Take that leap of faith and invest in yourself. The sisterhood of MPA will embrace you! The experience will help push you to another level of self-love, knowledge of self, and encourage your community service spirit.
