We ladies love getting our hands on the season’s most fashionable new bags! However, our handbags, as well as our luggage, can turn out to be magnets for bacteria.
Whether you tote a small purse or a leather sack large enough to carry everything from your iPhone and your laptop to your makeup bag and an extra set of gym clothes, you should start thinking about bag hygiene. Here are some tips for keeping your bags clean:
- Clean your bags, both inside and out, periodically.
- Wipe handles with antibacterial gel or disinfecting cloths (though, obviously, you have to find out what’s appropriate for your handbag’s material — I wouldn’t want you ruining that new Prada satchel or Michael Kors tote!).
- Keep your bag off the floor and away from handrails and any other places likely to harbor a multitude of germs.
- If possible, hold your bag rather than putting it down while using public restrooms — sling it over your shoulder, clutch it under your arm, or wear it around your neck if you have to.
- Do not set your bags down on your kitchen counters, dining table, desk, or other places where you’re likely to eat or rest your hands.
Provide a designated area where your friends can place their bags when they come over. - Take the same precautions with your luggage, because a lot of people touch your suitcases when they’re in transit and you don’t know how clean their hands are. If you can’t wipe down the handles at the baggage carousel, at least avoid touching your face, rubbing your eyes, and eating until you have a chance to wash your hands.
