Style Editor Cynthia Sliwa takes a look at more trends for fall.
Glamour Magazine has a slightly different set of fall’s top trends, with a major focus on legs this season. The magazine lists these top twelve trends in its September 2009 issue:
1. Mini Skirts
Be cautious about skirts that are wider than they are long. These are only for women who are comfortable flaunting gorgeous legs. You know who you are!
2. Skinny Jeans
A different approach than that taken by Bergdorf Goodman. Again, this look is all about having great legs, but it’s also about balance and proportion. Be sure you look grounded with some of the season’s fabulous chunky high-heeled shoes if you go this route.
3. Glitter
Glamour references Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” but the trend is the same as The Shining identified above.
4. Leggings for Everyone!
With a caveat stated by Glamour: “They’re great on all shapes if you treat them like tights, not pants—in other words, with a longer piece on top.” As with skinny jeans, be sure your look is balanced and in proportion from head to toe.
5. A Little Black Dress
Always chic. This season, Glamour suggests looking for “slightly funked-up versions” with details such as beading or studs (two of the trends mentioned above), “or wear your old standby with piled-on jewelry.”
6. A Studded Bag
Studs can go beyond the LBD and the bag. They are a major trend of the season.
7. Over-the-Knee Boots
As discussed above. Glamour comments: “They’re sexy, they’re punky, and they’re It this season. Pair them with your favorite rock ‘n’ roll mini, but remember, they should fit close to the leg on top—no gaping.” Glamour features a pair of boots by Christian Louboutin with a price tag of $1,995 – so one must hope that this trend is around for a while if one chooses to invest in it.
8. Colorful Sheath Dress
A trend favored by the First Lady, Glamour suggests adding tights in a subdued pattern to add newness to a favorite dress.
9. Layered-On Bracelets
A continuing trend, and an opportunity for creativity. As Glamour notes, the bracelets don’t have to be pricey. Use what you already have, and pile on “two (or four!) to give any style a new lifeline.”
10. A Big Necklace
The single most important trend in jewelry this season. Glamour suggests choosing something unique to spark conversation. The magazine adds a savvy tip: “If you have a short neck, a slightly longer (18 inches or more ) style is flattering.” Adjust the length upwards to give yourself some space under your chin.
11. A Bright and Tight Suit
The idea is to remove the jacket after work and to have a chic dress underneath, so this is not a typical business skirt suit being featured. What is pictured is actually a dress ($3,090) and jacket ($6,700) by Chanel along with Chanel accessories – a belt ($915) and two cuffs ($3,035 each). TheMarc Jacobs bag shown with the ensemble is another $1,100. Hosiery and shoes are not pictured; without hosiery and shoes, the look shown runs over $17,000. Remember, think unlimited dream budget. And then go out and adapt the look, if it suits you, not only to your form but also to your budget.
12. A Boyfriend Jacket
This oversize piece is meant to balance skinny jeans or a mini skirt, although Glamour says that “for extra fashion points” one might wear it with a long, flowy skirt. Be careful about wearing oversize over oversize, however, as the effect might be to hide your curves and make you look blocky. Unstructured jackets are flattering on every body.
